Retail Industry Update

Michael Jellson, Sr. Account Director

12/20/2011

According to a November 2011 survey conducted by SimplyHired, nationwide job openings increased for the fourth consecutive month, up 5.9% month over month and up 10% year over year. All 50 major metro markets saw positive month over month job growth which continues to be a great sign for our road to recovery.

As we are now in the middle of the busy holiday season, naturally retail hiring continues to see significant growth. The retail industry posted a 94.4% year over year growth. Job openings for retail salespersons were up 86.1% in November, just shy of October's 88.8% growth. Retail hiring will continue to see an increase due to seasonal hiring through the end of the year.

Coming off a record setting Black Friday, with over 226 million shoppers visiting stores and spending a record $11.4 billion dollars, there is continued optimism that the economy continues to improve. These numbers will continue to help fuel hiring in the retail sector.
